Does My Child Need to Know How to Swim?

It depends on the program. Non-swimmers are welcome in some programs, but swimming ability is required for others.

Programs that welcome non-swimmers

  • BEACH Program
  • VOLLEYBALL Program

Non-swimmers are welcome in these programs. However, for safety reasons, participants who cannot swim will not be allowed in the water past knee depth. We highly recommend taking swim lessons prior to attending.

Programs that require swimming ability

  • SURF Program
  • OCEAN Program

Participants must know how to swim to join these programs. See our OCEAN Program: What to Expect article for details on swimming expectations.

What about the SKATE Program?

The SKATE Program takes place at the Hermosa Beach Skatepark. No swimming involved!

Do you offer swim lessons?

We don't offer swim lessons, but all of our beach programs include education about the ocean environment, including how to read ocean conditions and avoid potential hazards.
